This week we had a top Labour aide arrested. We had adults going into a school and holding down a 15 year old kid then smashing his head with a hammer and we had extremists in court for trying to blow half of London up.

So which one of these stories tops the news? Big bloody Brother! (Don't worry - its name will never again spew from my keyboard.)

The world has officially gone mad. Agreed? Or not?

Thanks, TheOak, for your concern... I read plenty of books while researching my recent PhD, thanks. A bit of brain rot here and there is necessary after you've spent a year writing a 200,000 word thesis.

Haha...back in the day, WAYY back, there were big stories as well. The world has always been mad. I love looking at old newpapers, magazines....it's apparent that trouble has always been, and the human race will make the same mistakes over and over again. Back in 2000 I stopped watching the news, reading newspapers and the like. It was affecting my emotional health. I don't totally boycott it, but I get upset sometimes that I still read. I was trying to eat the other day when I glanced across an article of how a mother microwaved her newborn infant. I almost lost my lunch. It's good to stay current with events, but I am careful about where and how much I read or listen to. There is a limit to how much is really pertinent to you. Get lost in a good book!

Ok my thesis was only 150k words and half of it was I profess rubbish, but nonetheless I had to come up with the all-theory-no-practicality. My english tutor (he's forgotten me long ago) advised only broad sheets rather than tabloids, but anyway thats just a private personal opinion, I was happy with the coverage of british political/financial news that my weekly provides, as for BB it serves our curiosity into the televised lives of individuals whom we know nothing about-really, and with whom we have little in common. The press has gone mad but not the world, the world is still intrigued by itself, hence we're not upset when directed to read excerpts of other's views, and when increasingly told what we should read and how we should read it ie before or after watching the box.

The world has always been mad. From the Spanish inquisition to the Salem witch hunt, we have learned about mass hysteria. you know, an idividual human is a pretty intelligent creature generally, but a group o fpeople is not an intelligent mix. As a species, we have "mad" ideas. The kind of stuff you referenced happens all the time. It is hard to accept. It is hard to believe. Yes, the world has gone mad in this sense, but it went mad centuries ago and just still is mad. Hopefully, mankind will learn to care for itself someday before we destroy the Earth. Good question!!

Abso - flaming -lately
Racism is an important issue and must be tackled. I would have accepted some criticism of the comments made on Big Borer - but the outrage shown on the scale we have seen here is pathetic.
Why? - because the Lynch Mob are baying for the blood of a silly women who made stupid comments without thinking (and then apologised unreservedly for) - will sit down and watch this stupid programme while thousands are dying violent deaths in Iraq and the Middle East, thousands are dying from malnutrition and thousands are dying from AIDS every day across the world --AND THEY SAY NOTHING - SHAME ON THEM!!!

Context is something that disappeared 130 years ago when the infant tabloid press was born on the back of the Jack The Ripper case. They've been screwing this society ever since.

Read books, not toilet roll!

Sorry, I wasn't necessarily having a ... (200,000 words, my thesis was only 160,000...) I wasn't ncessarily having a pop at you personally, I just like to slip the odd mantra in. You know, "Equality rules" Freedom Of Speech" "Read books not Toilet Roll" etc. I must beg your pardon. When it comes to the destroyers of this society (the media) I oft go off reflex. All praise your individual thinkability.

No. Collectively the masses need an 'opiate' to calm and distract them. In today's World, or the view you gave of it at least, it's easier to focus on the furore created by a loud, charmless and uneducated girl than the problems which would, if thought about in depth, give us all nightmares.

It hasn't been made official yet but it's heading in that direction and may peak after Mr Bush's State of the Union address. Who knows, we have some new countries added to the Axis of Evil. Let us know if you hear anything.

Hello wildamberhoney,
I partially agree with you. The recent news coverage while seemingly trivial it brings an important message to the surface.
We don't accept aggression, bullying and racism. We are tolerant multicultural society. We well not tolerate intolerance and will not tolerate yobbish behaviour.
I am sure the news will be back with the usual cocktail of Iraq, terrorism, home office and immigration, crime etc

thanks

I agree. I hate Big Brother. It was bad enough that it started off in the states and now in the UK and that's all people are talking about! I don't even watch that show.
