Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist a change in its motion. For example, when a moving car suddenly brakes, the passengers in the car will sort of jerk forward, and 'pulled' back by the seat belt. This is because of inertia- the passengers do not want to stop moving.

The more mass an object has, the more inertia it will have. This explains why a heavier object will be more difficult to move than a lighter object- because the heavier object has more mass.

To know about inertial forces, one must know, “What is an inertial system?”


A body at rest in one system of coordinates may appear to move from another coordinate axes.

Therefore, when speaking about the law of motion, the frame of reference must always be indicated.

In many problems, the reference frame is understood, even thought it is not specifically mentioned.

Newton’s laws are valid in the frame of reference which is not accelerated. The system must move rectilinearly and uniformly or must be at rest. Such systems are called an inertial system.

In non inertial systems of coordinates, a body executes accelerated motion even when it is not interacting with the bodies.

Due to this acceleration, there are forces resulting from the non inertial character of the system.

These additional forces are called INERTIAL FORCES (although it would be more correct to call them non inertial forces).

These forces do not satisfy Newton’s third law of motion.

The fundamental law of mechanics in non inertial system of coordinates is written in the form:

ma = F + inertial forces.

One example of non inertial system of coordinates is the vertical motion of an elevator.

ma = F (elevator) - mg.

In this case the inertial force is mg.

What you are talking about is an apparent or imaginary force called centripetal acceleration caused by spinning an object like a weight on a string. The object wants to go straight because of it's "inertia", but can't because the string is holding it back.
