Read anything by Steinbeck: Of Mice and Men, The Pearl, East of Eden, etc.
Anything by Pat Conroy: Beaches, The Lords of Discipline, The Great Santini.
Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen.
Steinbeck has the knack of the common touch and develops complex tales of humans colliding with each other and their shortcoming.
Conroy's tales address some of the most common problems of youth and its tragedies. A common theme is an absent or abusive father, a flaky mother, a crew of brothers and sisters, and the joys and sorrows of young adulthood.
Jane Austen is the mistress of English manners and the caste system prevalent in England at the time. She has a sharp and caustic wit that will delight.
