I usually start talking really loud...
"Hey, Don't You Steal That"
"Hey, I See You, You Want To Go To Jail"
"Don't Make Me Call The Cops"
"Boy, I Know Your Mom"
I'vd done it before and it usually freaks out the kid and they put it back and leave. Its something for them to remember that no matter what..someone is always watching. They will think twice..next time.

I used to work in a grocery store and one day a little girl was caught stealing an onion. An onion you ask? Her mom was a drunk and she and her little brother were hungry and she didn't know what else to take. She was about 5 years old. We gave her bread, sandwich meat, cereal, granola bars, juice boxes. etc. We were all very young at the time and noone called child protection. Those poor kids. I still wonder about them sometimes and wish I had thought to make a call. So I guess I'd kind of confront, ask questions, but it depends on what he's stealing food or a video game, right?

This actually happened to me a fortnight ago!!!
I just stood there glaring at him without saying a word (but I had a pretty filthy look on my face). He walked into another aisle, so I followed him and kept staring, straight faced.
Without speaking a single word to each other, he went back and put it on the shelf and then went running to his mother (at the other end of the store), like I was THE baddie! I would have liked to see him tell THAT story to his mum!

It happened to me before & I followed him around letting him know I knew what he did.
He ended up throwing the candy in an aisle and running out of the store.

I wouldn't citizen arrest him but I would get him busted. Have you seen National Security? . Stealing little things now turns into big things later on.

If it was someone I knew, I'd confront them, make them put it back, and give them the choice, either I spank you, or I tell your parents and they'll spank you, probably alot worse.

Turn him in to the store security. Hopefully this would scare him enough so he won't do it again. Better to nip this behavior in the bud so he does not grow up to be a thug.
