Influence from all around! Young children, teens and young adults should treat piercings with risk, it's not all about fashion and it's certainly NOT a game. I find in that maintaining in control and being aware is important. Be alert of what's going on and discuss facts. Parents should have an open relationship to be able to talk to their children, people that they can trust to come to and discuss issues, saftey issues and self living. Giving them a chance to talk. I know society doesn't help much either, to each his own... More to themselves not thinking of the future. What the adults teach the young can destroy the generations to come. It's not easy for everyone.

This is for your friend, for her to take care of it immediately before things can get seriously complicated. It's a lot of responsibilities. Other information is also provided.

PIERCING AFTERCARE DO'S AND DON'TS

DO'S
Do wash hands thoroughly before cleaning the piercing
Do clean piercing at least 2 times a day
Do adjust clothing as needed, especially with navels
Do call us if you have any problems, questions, or concerns
Do treat your piercing gently
Do dry your navel out after cleaning to remove a moist environment

DON'TS
Do not touch piercing or jewelry with dirty hands (yours or someone else's)
Do not drag crusties through piercing or pick at them. If there is a crusty build up go clean it!
No Band-Aids or bandages
DO NOT USE Heficlens, hydrogen peroxide, Alcohol, witch hazel, Bactine, "ear care solution," etc. on any piercing, new or healed
Stay out of public swimming pool;s for at least 2 weeks. Avoid hot tubs and untreated water (lakes, etc.) for at least one month
No additional beads, chains, or weights for one year
No hard playing, tugging, or pulling for one year
Do not change jewelry on your own for one year. Consult us for any changes that you might want during that year
No bleaches or hair color while facial piercings heal

IMPORTANT: Never take antibiotics prescribed for someone else, on the theory that "if it worked for them it will work for me." If you need to go to a doctor, do not put off going because you are embarrassed. Infections can be serious and can result in permanent damage to the piercing or your health. If you simply can not face your regular doctor, then go to an emergency room. Nothing you can say, do , or show them will be a surprise. They have seen it all. Antibiotics should be considered a last resort. Most infections are minor and will clear up quickly with proper care. Antibiotics cannot help allergic reactions (to jewelry, soaps, or chemicals). Be certain you really need antibiotics before using them.

WASHING BARBELLS
Follow normal aftercare procedures for rings. For barbells, wash one end of the bar, then "gather " the skin to that side. Wash the exposed portion of the bar. Slide the sking over the clean section. gathering it against the clean ball. Wash the second half of the bar. Repeat this process to rinse. For the first week or so, pushing the skin over far enough to clean the full length of the bar may be difficult. Do the best you can. With time, the piercing will become looser and easier to wash.

*** Treatment for an infected belly button ring: ***

Even if after all your care, your belly button ring still gets infected then you should treat it immediately and very seriously.

- The first thing you might think of doing is removing the belly ring. But if the navel is discharging pus, DO NOT remove the belly button ring. If the ring is removed, the hole of the piercing will shut and the pus will not be able to drain out properly. This can result in a very painful abscess.

An abscess is a type of infection caught under the skin. Symptoms of an abscess include pain, swelling, and darkening and hardening of the tissue surrounding the piercing. An abscess can generally be treated by oral antibiotics, but in some cases it may need surgical removal.

Sometimes an abscess may form even if the infected belly button ring is not taken out, mainly if the piercing is very swollen or the belly ring is very tight around the piercing. In such a case it may be advisable to change your belly ring and use one with a thinner gauge.

- To increase blood circulation to the pierced navel and allow the infection to drain, a hot compress should be used. Soaking the piercing in hot salt water is also very beneficial. Use ? teaspoon table salt in 8 ounces of water. (Epsom salts cannot be used as they are not the same as sea or table salts). The container used for the soaking should be thoroughly disinfected. Hot compresses should be disposable and preferably made from clean disposable materials such as cotton balls and gauge bandages.

- Over-the-counter antiseptic creams can be used in treating mild infection. But these should not be used for an extensive period of time or for any puncture wound.

- Hydrogen peroxide can be used for draining pus and clearing the infection around the belly button ring. Not to be used for aftercare though.

- In case of a systemic infection (when bacteria and toxins spread throughout the body via the bloodstream) treatment should be immediate as this type of infection can be fatal. Standard treatment requires oral and intravenous antibiotics.

Any infection that does not clear within a few days, or an abscess should be shown to a certified medical practitioner. In some cases the infection can be cured and the piercing is just fine. In others, because of the infection the hole may close and you have to get another piercing done. This does not mean you can never have a belly ring. It just means that you need to let your belly button heal and then try again. In the end, it?s going to be worth the trouble!

Infection is a possible threat for a fashion-lover who wants to pierce the body to improve appeal.

A belly button ring infection is caused by pathogens like bacteria and fungi. Inappropriate methods of piercing, contact with dirty hands, or a bath in polluted waters can all result in infection.

Infections have to be identified in the early stages to avoid complications. It is difficult to distinguish between the symptoms of infections since bleeding and discoloration are normal after a piercing. The early symptoms include redness and swelling of the area. The affected area will be warm. Complication of the infection starts from bleeding of the wound. The discharge may include greenish, yellowish, or grayish pus. Pain is the most noticeable symptom of an infection.

Uncared infection leads to conditions such as abscess and cellulitis. Abscess is the infection caused under the skin. Symptoms like pain, swelling, and bleeding are common. Cellulitis is a condition in which the infection has crossed the surrounding area of the wound. The tenderness and redness of the tissue extends to the whole belly. It may lead to abdomen infection and blood poisoning. Fever and body aches denote a critical condition in which the whole body is affected with the infection. Immediate hospitalization is recommended in such conditions.

Consultation with the individual who did the piercing to learn the exact condition of the wound must be the preliminary action; a physician must be approached for treatment. Antibiotics are used to treat systemic infections. Topical application of ointments is avoided since it inhibits oxygen supply. A moist, hot press is applied for relief. The jewelry is retained in the position to avoid blockage in the discharge, which may result in issues that are more serious.

Infection can be avoided with proper care. Generally, it takes between six months to two years for the complete healing of the wound. The initial jewelry and needle used for the piercing must be sterilized to avoid infection. The jewelry must be nickel free and smooth to avoid abrasions.

I hope this helps. Take care.
