My school is doing a Shakefest this year consisting of a bunch of scenes from different Shakespeare's plays including Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, ect. During auditions, I found out that we couldn't show any scenes of someone dying and I was just like 'what the heck?'. What is Romeo and Juliett without the famous ending? Aren't us teenagers revealed to death constantly in movies, tv, games, ect? Heck, they might as well not let us watch Bambi or The Lion King in school because they are "inappropriate" with some of the scenes in them. I think the School Board(well mine at least) comes up with such stupid rules. I personally think that the new director is being taken advantage of with rules that don't make sense, including another conflict we had in the other production we did this year. What to you guys think about this? Anyone else have this rule in their school system?

I do not have this rule at my school... or at least that I know of, but I agree! what is the point of doing classic plays if the school is just going to censor what the students see?if death is an inappropriate subject then I guess your school cannot teach about wars, slavery and many of the issues that developed our country, let alone classic works of literature. Sorry your school has such a lame rule and that they are actually hindering your learning experience :o( Besides you have o have the death scence in Romeo and Juliet... that's kinda the whole point and what makes the story have it's impact on the reader or viewer...

Some little prissy social lioness' sweet darlin' in the audience may be traumatized by the depiction of death. Scarred for the rest of their natural born life. May even become a serial killer. Bull crap!
I've been killed a hundred times. Even got to where I could do a a real dramatic death scene. I think I was all of eight years at the time.
Back then it was called USING YOUR IMAGINATION. Sheezch! Such stupid ignoramuses!

Well, that's ridiculous! Death is an important part of the plays, they can't just cut it out and expect the play to have the same effect.
My school just edits out sex and curse words from the musical, but Shakespeare seems to have a free reign. We had plenty of death AND boys in drag last year.
Is this a public or private school? Private might have more say in that sort of thing over public. You could always just take up the issue with your principle.

I hhave never heard of such a rule but it really does not suprise me with the way society has become.I am not saying that i agree or disagree with this rule but there are many that would sue the school for displaying a play that involved death. The way the laws are now days, they would win over the school.People sue and win over minor things this day and time that are rediculos.

i totally agree. im not sure if my school shares that rule or not, but i think that it is so ignorant to try and shield us from those situations when that stuff happens every day, whether on tv, a movie, in books, or in real life. if they can suggest sexual relaltions between romeo and juliet, then whats the difference between the two? its just an act and is not promoting violence, so its ignorant to rule against showing it. plus - i mean, c'mon, seriously, i dont know of any teenagers out there that havent seen a suggestive scene of either violence of sexual relations. do you?

If you want to do something about this, I would get your parent to complain to the school board.
Also I would contact the local press, etc...and let them know what is happening.
If there is a local ACLU office, I'm sure they would be interested in hearing about this.
