Columbus didn't really find the territory that is now the United States, he came across a few islands in the Caribbean. Although, it was ultimately his discovery that brought other nations to the Americas (North, South, and Central), including Spain, France, and England among others. Spain held almost all of South and Central America with the exception of Brazil, which was Portugese. The Spanish expanded into the southern and western US and had a large amount of territory there as well. The French stuck largely to Canada, but also had a considerable amount of land in the United States. Even smaller nations like the Netherlands had territory in the US.

Now for why America speaks English. England founded a bunch of colonies (13, to be exact) along the Atlantic Ocean, and absorbed some foreign territory when it did. New York was carved out of what was once Dutch territory (New Netherland). When the Americans fought and won the Revolutionary War ane became their own nation, they started to take some of the territory that once belonged to other nations. It bought up French Louisiana in the Louisiana purchase, and gained the Spanish territory of Florida later on. It wasn't a fast process--the borders of the continental US weren't set in stone until well into the 1800s. America gradually absorbed most of the Spanish territory in the southwestern US, and eventually set the northern border of the United States in place with a treaty with Britain.

So, in short, the reason that the United States doesn't speak Spanish (or French or Dutch, for that matter) is because all of the other countries in the United States slowly sold, lost, or ceded their territories to the English-speaking Americans, so the territories we acquired adopted English. It's still quite obvious where each country had holdings, though. The Southwest is still heavily influenced by Spanish culture, and areas of Midwest and the South (particularly the state of Louisiana) are full of French influence. A bit long winded on the answer, but I hope it clears things up!

Better question. Why don't we live on North or South Columbus?

Answer.. Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian map maker was the first to publicly say that Columbus did not reach India or China, but a whole "new world" North and South America are named after him.

The United States evolved from 13 English colony's.

New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Virgina, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, were subject to the English Crown before 1776. And therefore spoke English from the beginning.

Columbus, an Italian contracted by the Spanish government, landed in the Caribbean on present day Cuba and the Dominican Republic on his voyages. The Spanish spread from there to Central and South America, going into Florida, and then California and the American South-west. The British were the first to establish large colonies in North America and brought English with them.

Columbus is believed to have been from Genoa, which is now part of Italy. The reason the main language in the USA is English is because the USA was originally formed from English colonies. Many of the first American citizens had come from Germany, still English won over. Stick around a few more decades and you will hear much more Spanish being spoken.

Columbus was Italian, but used Spain to get funding to travel. And didn't Columbus not technically even find America, but an island in the Caribbean somewhere? Even if Columbus had been Spanish and had landed on the American coast, he didn't inhabit it. The pilgrims were the first immigrants to actually live in America and they were from England, hence the English.

he wasnt spanish, he was italian, most of the great voyagers of the time were either italian or portuguese, except they sailed for different countries because Italy wasn't really big on the whole exploration thing. So all the voyagers ended up going to other countries to get money and boats. Columbus ended up in Spain because most of the other countries didnt think it was a good investment to send a guy the opposite direction to India. As we know Spain got extremely lucky that he ended up in the West Indies and was accredited to the finding of the "Americas" (which was actually Amerigo Vespucci, hence America) and they got really rich off of it. He didn't even know that he found a new place, he thought he was in India, thats why the native americans are called "Indians" even though theyre not. Amerigo Vespuchi was the smart one
