I have - they tend to see the owning of a pet like owning a slave. All animals should be free - bit on the unrealistic side, huh?

I knew someone who felt this way. But, there must be a reason why pets usually live two times their life expectancy in captivity. A controlled environment is a lot better than an uncontrolled one depending how it is regulated.
We all know how animal mills go. And we all know how clothes are made by little slave children through outsourcing what are we suppose to do live naked. Well, if you want a pet you have to live with the facts as unfortunate as they are. Like clothes animals have become a commodity.

People think owning pets is ethically wrong because they are bred to be pets and millions of animals are mistreated every year due to this breeding. For example people love Husky dogs. The Huskies you find in the pet store are bred by other huskies whose sole purpose is to be the carrier of baby Huskies to sell. They live their entire lives in cages, are often abused and alot of times their babies are taken away too early and thus the pets you buy also have problems. My friend recently bought a kitten at a pet store and the store lied to my friend saying it was old enough to be taken away from it's mother only to find out from a vet that the kitten was only about a month old. It was also supposedly vaccinated which was also a lie. And pet stores do this all he TIME! And when the pet gets too old to be seen as "desireable" for selling and if it isn't sold it is MERCILESSLY killed.
Thus by owning a pet you increase the demand for that particular pet and therefore increase the amount of breeding done for that animal and the amount of cruelty occuring. You buy a dog the demand for that dog does up.

Nothing wrong to have pet which is free, but having a pet in cage or by binding is a sin - because for the pleasure of the self we are actually giving pain to other creature.
In fact I feel that the one which is kept in cage or bondage cannot be really called as PET because that is not really enjoying the life

I think its because animals aren't in their natural states. most dogs in the wild don't travel in purses or wear knitted sweaters and halloween outfits.
the argument may be more for new, non-domesticated animlas people are trying to keep at homes.
sometimes these arguments havea point, a snapping turtle in tap water with no filter will get green fuzz (algey maybe?) around its shell, it won't have that in a dirty lake however.
for cases like that it may be best to say that some animals can't be pets and finding ways to accomodate them, instead of just leaving them alone can be seen as unethical

Might be. It just depends on the mentality of the person. Some think it is great to have a pet to share ur mood with and some think it is wrong to encave a livingbeing. My younger brother doesn't like imprisoning or chaining our dog, for instance.... :-)
