Goths, like all slowly looses it's meaning to things. I assume you mean the 80's Goths as most ones now are imitation Goths. Goths were people rejected by society for nonsense reasons; aragontly superior intellect, not following trends, being from a poor or bad neighborhood. As a survival mechanism they chose to embrace their banishment. Taboo themes are used as a way to both create a wall to distance themself from the norm and as a lighthouse and a gate for people similarly banished.
Think of it as the early days of America. We hated Britain and could not conform with them anymore. America embraced that change, we cherished democracy and equality because it was the exact opposite of a monarchy.
Now modern day Goths that think they are Goths just because they wear all black, listen to emo bands, and have Nightmare before Christmas merchandise are trying to turn into a fashion since that also serves as a cheap veil to pretend to be something unique when they are just mindless conformists (remember real Goths use their image to show that they are Goths, but what makes them Goth is not the image it is how they think, they rejection from society, and their nonconformist attitude). Poser Goths pretend to have these things (where is their anti corporation attitude when they buy from Hot Topic?)
You have a right and a duty to mock and hate poser Goths but if you see a rare real goth leave him/her alone they will do the same to you.

Er, I don't. You must be thinking of thirteen-year-old mall goths, who apply their makeup with trowels. But most mature goths are quite good at it, and prefer a more sophisticated, refined look to the 'just stumbled out of the grave' look.

They do so because they are seeking attention. Also, it gives them a sense of "belonging" to a group cuz they feel they can't make it in society.
