Well, I fit into lots of different types of groups, but I'll choose deaf folks as my group for this question and yes, I am a good credit for the deaf population. Why?
-There is a huge stereotype that people who are deaf are also stupid and I'm in the process of getting my second Masters degree (this time in library science - MLS). Even with affirmative action, etc., I wouldn't be able to go this far in my education if I was truly not smart enough.
-Another stereotype is that people who are deaf (and really, disabled in any way) refuse to talk about it with other people and can get big attitudes if asked about it by someone else. Now this is one I do really see all the time, but we're not all like that and I try really hard to be completely open with others about my medical problems, which include deafness, partial blindness, and multiple brain tumors. I figure that the only way to help people understand who do not experience this stuff and geniunely want to know is to educate them and be open with them. How else are barriers and stereotypes going to be broken if no one talks about their experiences? How else is someone going to understand all the daily struggles many deaf and hard of hearing people unless we are open and honest with others? It makes me sad when I see a disabled person act like a jerk because someone asks what happened to them or wants to help them. I do realize it's a big pain to say the same things over and over, but (in explaining what happened), but it's one of those things we all just need to do to help the uneducated in that area. Also, a lot of people try to give us help, what they perceive we need help with, when we can do it on our own, and often PREFER to do it on our own. We already lost something and if we allow people to wait on us hand and foot, it can make use feel powerless, but instead of getting attitudes, we need to explain to others that we prefer to do it ourselves and explain why, and basically have patience. That is something I strive to do everyday.

Yes, I definitely am a credit to my kind, for without my leadership and guidance, my kind would fall away into compliance with other large kinds and we'd forever dissolve into the abyss of obscurity

My "kind" would be the human race. I could aim higher, but I'm trying. Great question.
