The easiest way to network between two computers is to use a router. After you have a router, just plug an ethernet cable into the router for each computer you want to network, and then plug the cables in to each of them. If you want to have shared internet access, you can plug a DSL or cable modem into the WAN port of the router. After this, the network should be established. If you want the computers to share files, then run a network setup on each of them. Windows XP comes with a Network Setup Wizard that can be accessed from My Network Places.

Assuming you will be connecting to the internet with them both, here is a basic list of what you will need:
1. Three CAT 5 or CAT 5e cables (length to suit your needs)
one for each computer and one to go to the DSL modem or router (if you have both, then you'll need four).
2. a network hub or switch (4-port are the smallest they make) make sure is has an "UPLINK" port, this is what goes to your Router/Modem.
3. The router
4. your DSL Modem (with the phone cord plugged into it)
If you start your "Home networking wizard" in XP, there is a diagram of what you'll need and a connection layout as well.
This will also make a floppy disk you can use to configure the other computer(s) on the network.

In there you will see labrats and there will be some episodes and which one of them is a video on how to set up a network between computers. There is also a whole bunch of other episodes Labrats have that explain about computers

You can also directly connect the two machines using a crossover cable connected to the ethernet ports and share the Internet connection that way.
