The short of it is that in 2003, under the moderate leadership of Khatami, Iran offered EVERYTHING to the US.
They offered to cater their nuclear program to our demands of transparency.
They offered to cut off funding to Hezbollah.
They offered to help the US in Iraq.
The only request they had was that a terrorist militia called Mujahedeen Khalq be shut down, and relations be restored.
The state department was foaming at the mouth to make a deal, but Cheney, acting with the mentality of a 13 year old schoolgirl who refuses to speak with a friend who is trying to make amends was quoted as saying "We don't talk to evil"
I seem to remember Reagan talking to the USSR, and he called them the evil empire.

I realize that the president of Iran is kind of a figurehead position, LeAnne, but if Khatami had been able to negotiate with the US, something that the Iranian public would be in favor of, maybe he would have gotten the popular support to put some weight behind his position. Who knows, the end result may have landed the Guardianship Council in jail in some kind of coup.
