i'm about to have my first day of classes on tuesday, and i just had myself registered in a class because i'm an immigrant (i'm in the US, by the way)and i already missed the first meetings of my classes (socio 100 & philo 200). i just want to ask what can i expect from a class of college students in the US? and if professors USUALLY give homeworks, because if ever they did, i won't be able to submit it in time. thanks in advance for your answers. :)

Oh yeah. Had a quiz the second day of class once. Depends on the professor. Usually, they're pretty cool about stuff like that. But be prepared to study and write a lot.

Since you are transferring I am sure they will give you time to catch up. Don't be afraid to ask your professor's for help. That's what they're being paid to do!

Good luck!

Usually the first day of classes is just a review of the syllabus, unless the class is normally 2 or 3 hours long, in which case the professor might have started lecturing on material.

However, you're very unlikely to have homework due the second day.

I'd see if the professors from those classes have office hours on Monday or if the class syllabus is available before Tuesday and at least look at that. The first class is usually a handing out of the semester syllabus and and overview of the semester ... sometimes met with required reading for the second class. Get moving on Monday and see if you can find those syllabi. Perhaps the syllabi are available online?

Many college students miss the first few days of class. Your professors are aware of this, anything you missed, you will have the chance to make up.
Most professors give some homework on the first day, but it is usually reading.

I have never given homework on the first day of class. On the days that I do give homework I give the students about a week before they have to submit it. The grading in my class weights more heavily on the tests than anything else. It really depends on what classes you're taking and what professor you have.

I teach math at a community college and I always start teaching the first day of class. Also, the first day of class will usually take the entire class period because there is so much to go over.

Most professors hand out the syllabus on the first day, and that may have the homework assignments on it. Also, most universities and professors have some sort of website or WebCT that lists the assignments and lecture notes.

Good Luck

yes, some professors give homework on the first day and at some colleges you are expected to have the first weeks reading done by the first class. Check your syllabus that you should have gotten with your books etc.

Depends on where you go. Some big name colleges the professors expect you to produce papers and assignments on the drop of a hat, or other more compassionate professors allow you a week to get settled before jumping into what they want from you. If you are worried, why not call your professor or email them and ask?

On the first day, the class usually receives and reviews the syllabus and the only homework is to return with your text books for the next class.
