Because the British media is primarily based in London and tends to be biased in favour of London and England.

For example: When Andy Murray does well he's British, if Tim Henman does well he's English. Conversely, if gun crime rises in London then it's a British thing but if it rises in Glasgow then it's a Scottish thing. A few years ago when the whole of Scotland ground to a halt in severe blizzards it wasn't even mentioned on the news but when a few people got stuck on one stretch of motorway near London it was the headlines for 3 days.

But... the reverse side is that the same thing happens in Scotland. If you read the Record or Press and Journal for example they do exactly the same - they'd call Murray a Scot and Henman a Brit.

"British" is a term covering everyone in the British Isles, which includes England, Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland. But every Scot knows that this is only a label placed on them by the English, who don't know any different. Just remember that the Scots were the only people ever to get the Romans to build them a fence, and a free one at that (Hadrian's wall) to keep the English out of Scotland. It was the only clearly defined boundary to the Roman Empire, and that's REALLY something!

I must admit I don't always like being called British as there are 4 countries in Britain. I prefer to be known as English.
