Don't you mean why does the sun go on shining? In which case:
Why does the sea rush to shore?
Don't they know it's the end of the world
'Cause you don't love me anymore?
Skeeter Davis track 'The end of the World' - covered beautifully by the Carpenters.

The stars that we can see are all celestial bodies like our sun. They are so very very far away from us that they look tiny, but in fact they are huge. Whilst a star is `alive` we can see the light from it, it could `live` for millions of years, but when it burns out so dose the light that we can see coming from it. Because the stars are so far away, we may at present be looking at stars that no longer exist. For example if a star is ten light years from us, we continue to see its` light for ten years after it has burned up.

Why does the sun go on shining
Why does the sea rush to shore
Don't they know it's the end of the world
'Cause you don't love me anymore
Why do the birds go on singing
Why do the stars glow above
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when I lost your love
I wake up in the morning and I wonder
Why everythings the same as it was
I can't understand, no I can't understand
How life goes on the way it does
Why does my heart go on beating
Why do these eyes of mine cry
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when you said goodbye
Why does my heart go on beating
Why do these eyes of mine cry
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when you said goodbye

Because they are suns, like our one. Some bigger. Just that they are a long way away they look so small. (4 lightyears for the nearest one)
