Choose either a series or a novel that you liked BEST, and another series or novel that made you feel like you'd wasted your time reading it.

My favorites: I liked Robin Hobb's "Farseer" series a lot. I also liked Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar/Midkemia stuff a lot.

My picks for blahs of the genre: Dragonlance Chronicles and Fionavar Tapestry.

I'll have to disagree about Robin Hobb's Farseer series.Burrich's relationship with Molly was too disturbing considering that he's sort of a father figure for Fitz. That spoiled the series for me.

As for Mercedes Lackey, I liked her Dragonjouster series but didn't like Arrows trilogy.Talia's rape was distressing and I didn't like her relationship with her boyfriend's friend.

I adore The Daughter of the Empire series by Raymond E Fiest & Janny Wurts, and also loved the 6 book Starman series by Sara Douglas ( Go the Aussie!!).

Fell asleep reading Mercedes Lackey

I really like a lot of fantasy series but probably R A Salvatore's Drizzt series best for true fantasy. and Mercedes Lackey fairytale remakes and Andre Norton's Witch world

and you're right Dragonlance have all sucked. I've tried no less then 3 of the different series. but that's all I havent' really liked

Favorites: Guy Gavriel Kay, just about any of it. Song for Arbonne and Lions of al-Rassan, especially. GRR Martin is awesome, gritty and nasty and utterly unpredictable from the get-go. Tolkien, of course, none better.

Bad fantasy...probably the Xanth stuff. It's amusing, but it's fluff.

As a teen, and still to this day "The Dark is Rising" sequence by Susan Cooper has been my favorite.

I think that the Brian Jacques "Redwall" novels are overrated.

good?
GRRM Song of Ice and Fire (so far grreat)

bad?
the Fools' Gold trilogy by Jude Fisher, the first two build up to a not so great climax, and I got mad at myself for continuing to read the whole thing.....eeek
