maybe, "they" have a history of doing just that. the pledge has changed several time since in was first written.
it used to start off
" I pledge alligence to the flag" but it did not specify which flag. and people read a lot more into the pledge than what is there.
"One nation under god with liberty and justice for all"
well i won't get started on that sentence

Secular Progressives would like to limit our freedom of religion by taking away the words "under god", which would discriminate against those who believe in god (most of the country) in order to make atheists happy

Changing it to reflect pledging allegace to the country, not the flag and god would be nice, but it's not gonna happen.
