It depends on what you want to play. I started learning from "How to PLay Guitar " by Roger Evans. I found it very useful to get the basics, i.e. learning simple chords, notes, scales, fingerings, and learning about, if not how to play, different techniques.
I also have benefitted alot from "How to Write Songs on Guitar," although it is not for you yet if you don't know how to play at all.
Once you learn a few chords, have a basic understanding of keys, chords, and scales, the best way to learn is to play with people. There are usually lots of guitar players around who will want to sit around and trade licks and play songs.

You want to start by practicing non-bar chords. Or you could put up adds looking 4 lessons. I cant teach you this over the internet it would take a lot of time and tecnology. After you get most of the chords and you wanna work on speed Guiter Hero is a really good place to practice switching chords. If would help you strum faster and switch chords. I played guitar hero 4 like 2 years and got guitar hero 3 for chirstmas and i got so much better.
