It's not recommended. Dyes from the darker clothes can stain the lighter colors.

Sometimes its okay. You have to consider the fabric type and how many times you've washed the item. If you wash synthetics together of different colours, they seem to turn out okay but throw in a medium blue sweatshirt and then the cotton fuzz will cling like mad to the synthetics. So to answer your question, yes, it can be done but its tricky and so the old colour sorting is the best. I suspect that you're using a laundry mat and its difficult to adjust the load of your machine which can make it expensive.

Hello. I am a grandmother of 13. I am raising one of my granddaughters. She is 7 and loves to play in the dirt. I wash all of our clothes together (lights and darks). I wash in cold water and use liquid Tide with Bleach Alternative. I have always washed all of my clothes together. I have always been able to get our clothes clean. When the white socks, towels, undies, etc. look dingy (gray looking), I wash them by themselves in hot water with laundry soap and bleach. And the cold water helps the fabric retain its form. Warm or hot water relaxes the fibers and that is when fabric stretches and loses it shape and color.
Also, I don't recommend using powder detergent. Especially in cold water. If the detergent doesn't dissolve completely, it acts like sandpaper on the fabric. Have you ever taken your clothes out of the washer and seen white streaks on the dark clothes? This is the undissolved detergent.
I hope this has been helpful to you. Have a wonderful night.

You are not going to save money in the end as all your whites are going to turn grey or even other colours if you continue to wash things altogether. Not a good practise, use the small load setting on your machine.

I do. With the new liquid soap w/lbeach for colors and whites..there is no problem. If you are worried about "reds" bleeding on to the socks,I have never had that problem,I use "warm" water, sometimes I use hot for just whites, and light blue uniforms that I wear, and they turn out fine.
I only wash for 1,so I don't have that many clothes really to worry about it,but I really don't see any problem with it.
I know in the old days, with separate bleaches for just whites, and powder soap for colors,I guess you used to have to.
Like I said ,I never had a problem with any types of bleedings on to other colors, and my white socks turn out still white,no orange or red socks yet,oh.and I don't have tighty whities to worry about,I wear boxers.
I use liquid soap, set my washer on permanent press, and warm setting. Never had a problem, although like I said, sometimes to really get them clean I use "hot" water for whites only. Mostly I use warm.

It's not a sin or anything - but if you like your whites actually looking white, I wouldn't wash them with darks or colors.

you better use cold water if you do. hot will cause the darks to bleed their colors into the water and the whites could absorb them. then you will be able to do all of them together cause they will be dingy grey. if the clothes aren't anything you are too fond of, or just grub clothes go ahead and do it.

Eventually your whites become greys and if the whites have fuzz, it ends up on the darks. Depends on your expectations from your laundry. The key is "eventually" and "your expectations". Your call. I can understand your reason for doing this.
