i've been hearing stuff lately about how growth hormones in our food are causing kids to start puberty sooner... is this true? how does this work?

Well, it depends on who you ask. Some researchers believe that young women cannot start puberty early just by ingesting food that has been given growth hormones. They would have to be injected with it....
Another theory is obesity. When a young woman's body 'matues' and becomes fatty in certain places, her body's puberty switch comes on. With children being overweight at an early age, her body doesn't know that it's from lack of exercise and too much fast food. It just thinks that it's time to start puberty.

Some feel its due to Bovine Growth Hormone which is given to cows to fatten them up and get them to produce more milk. But its in every dairy product we eat (unless labeled "NO BGH") and on average, girls are getting their periods earlier these days than ever before. It also has to do with the balence of calories consumed to the expenditure of calories (exercise) and today, its easy to be lazy and over-eat and not have to do to much exercise. A perfect example would be walking to school....I did it, but my children dont have to....we have too many busy streets that werent there when i was young! The average age of onset of menstruation was 12 for me and now its 10. But it affects everyone differently.

its cuz they inject the cows and pigs and stuff with steriods and hormones so they grow faster and bigger, and when we eat it then we get some of those steroids and hormones
