It's really no different than confusing "America" with the "Federal Democratic-Republic of the United States of America."

Which happens often.

Although England is contained within the United Kingdom, the United Kingdom is not just England. I think a lot of people, especially us Americans with the devil may care attitude about the world, think the two mean the same. In reality England is just one part of the U.K. There is also Wales, Scootieland, Ire's ville land, and on and on, including many colonies and kingdoms throuhgout the world. It can be confusing for some one who was taught only American history to comprehend the entire empire, not just the part we remember from the revolutionary war info.

No, but then I am in the USA. I call England England, Wales Wales, Scotland Scotland and etc. some times when referring to what you are calling the U.K. I refer to it being the British Isles.

My husband is from Scotland and he gets a little annoyed with it too. I think most people (from America) tend to call it Britain more than the U.K.

Being American, I call it whatever - UK, England, Britain... I really don't know what Britons call it. It's only when I stop and really think about it that I remember that England isn't the only part of the UK.
