Whenever I think of a topic to write about ie: a book..not poetry or anything...:]
I always get another idea that spurs from the topic Im writing about right then or I always get distracted by grammatical errors...Its rather annoying and I always end up dumping the whole story idea.

I used to have the same problem. Well, I still do. But, here is what my creative writing teacher told me to do.
Whenever you get a good idea, write it down rather than think about it. I don't mean start writing the story right away but brainstorm the ideas down onto paper and divide each little idea by bulletins. Then, you can look back at all your ideas and decide what works for your story and what doesn't. Choose what feels right. Remember, your characters really do exist in the center of your mind and you have the responsibility of creating the world they shall experience.
