Cherokee is an Indian reservation. If you like to gamble, then the area might hold some attraction. There is a Harrah's Casino, run by the Cherokee Tribal Nation. Cherokee itself isn't much to speak of, a few tourist shops and that is about it.

If you are thinking of the NC mountains, think more to Asheville, Waynesville, and Hendersonville and surrounding areas. All three of these are thriving mountain towns, with fairly good economies, good business districts, and some cultural events going on regularly. And they are near enough to visit Cherokee at will. Asheville is the biggest, with an artsy kid of vibe everywhere. Waynesville is full of "real" people. Hendersonville is a retirement mecca, of sorts. All are beautiful and a great place to call home.

Do a web search for the chambers of commerce in these cities, and you will be able to find out the particulars.
