Yes I think the media tried to make the league look desperate by emphasizing the 250 number when everyone in the US knows soccer isnt as popular n the US than it is worldwide. Although most of the 250(200 goes to image rights/endorsements etc which the owner who is paying for Beck's services should easily receive). Americans dont like to watch foreign leagues. Also, they wont watch an inferior league. So basically the domestic league needs to feature the best players in the world. In soccer, its very difficult to do this as the sport is so widely played worldwide that the best player5s are featured in 6 or 7 different leagues but IF MLS(or whomever) buys say the top 400 of best players in the world as rated by FIFA, and the rest of American grown talent then you will get a pretty big increase in ratings. MLS doesnt have that many teams. A slow but significant expansion must take place.

US is not exactly good at soccer which is the most spectated sport in the world - FIFA is bigger than the Olympics. But David Beckham is World Class and what he could teach to previously self taught US amateurs is knowledge that could build the US team to the same league as western Europe or Brazil.
Admit it the USA in soccer at a world event look like a bunch of ballerinas in a boxing match. David Beckham could teach the USA team riches beyond the price of Beckham's payroll.
David Beckham has been there he has had the success and world fame, he has the qualifications. If USA are not willing to pay and want it all on the cheap then don't expect international prestige in the world arena at international football and the potential untapped marketed billions $$$ coming from it.

I'm from the U.S. and I think that they just might be doing the exact right thing. The reason I think that is because, as the world knows, we're just about the only country in the world that just isn't all that interested in soccer. Most of us couldn't name teams from other countries, and couldn't name players. The only names most of us know are Pele and David Beckham. We mostly know David Beckham from the tabloids, but he is one of the only players who is almost a household name here. Just the news that he's coming here has already aroused some curiosity. I think that there just might be people who are going to watch when he comes here---again, out of curiosity. He's actually drawing attention to soccer here in bigger numbers than I can ever remember. It just might have been a brilliant move on the part of the team. If it helps generate the interest here that they're HOPING it will, then it will pay back the $250 million sooner than you think.

I don't think soccer will ever be popular as a professional sport in the US. The sport was not invented in this country and we're the only country that even calls it soccer. Soccer is good for schools but not for professional level. If the US wins the World Cup (which I doubt), soccer will probably grow a little more here, but not that much. It's just not what football and baseball are here.

there's a sturdy danger that form call Beckham could come over in some years whilst he can now no longer play on the splendid flight in Europe. he's so properly known interior the US that he could desire to capitalise on that. he's a merchandising device. Im no longer so helpful approximately Ronaldo. He would not talk the language and merely won't be afflicted with the hasstle. ny could desire to end searching for turning out to be old stars and seek for some vibrant up and coming young babies.

Some sports just don't succeed in some countries. Maybe its like expecting Hockey to be successful in Japan.
The US tried the exact same thing 30 years ago. If George Best, Franz Beckenbauer, Johan Cruijff, Pelé, Eusebio, Bobby Moore, etc, etc couldn't make football acceptable for Americans then David Beckham isn't going to.
Maybe you American should simply accept that football isn't going to be a popular sport.

Do something to get Americans to like soccer better. I would have to say before following the world cup this last year I wasn't that into soccer, now I sorta enjoy watchin(but not more than football). They need to promote more on local channels not just ESPN. More Promotion.....

Its the same in australia, we just have too many other well seeded sports for soccer to compete with, i think just like us you would need to win the world cup, we call it soccer too mate!
