When I had my oil change I prefer it after driving but I make sure that I have a lot of time, so I don't rush myself. After driving home I'll wait for a while for most of the oil to settle down and cool down a bit, otherwise I'll burn myself, that's not ideal. The oil pan was designed in such a way that the heavier particles will end up in the very bottom anyway. And I wait until there's no more oil dripping before closing the drain plug and move to the oil filter very carefully not to drain it's content back into the engine.

If the oil is fairly warm(scalding hot oil should only be used against those who storm the castle walls) the dirt particles is in suspension and will come out with the oil....where as if the oil is cold, some of those particles have settled to the bottom of the oil pan and will remain there until they are stirred up again(the next time the engine runs)
That is the theory, how important it is I don't really know. I do mine cold. I have an oil filter that should take care of the particals.

With a hot engine, remove the drain plug, after it's draining remove the old filter. I like to throw in a liter (quart) of new oil for a flush. After the oil has slowed to a drip, replace the drain plug, pour a little fresh oil in the new filter and rub some oil on the rubber seal on the filter. Tighten down the filter, fill the crankcase with new oil, run the engine, check for leaks, and you're good to go.

Drain it hot. Not only will the oil flow out easier, but any dirt or foreign material, such metal particles, will be held in suspension by the oil and be carried out with it. Just be careful not to scald your fingers. I prefer to wear industrial strength rubber gloves when draining oil. Another good reason for doing so is that used oil contains carcenogens which can leach into the skin.

Well, with the engine hot, is because all the dirt is trapped in the oil and will more and likely come out as its being drained. So they say. I personally haven't seen much difference.

I personally change mine when the engine is warm, that way the oil is hot and it'll flow out faster and it usually takes some of the grime and grit out with it. But, be careful not to burn yourself.

its better to drain the oil while the egine is warm because the oil will be more fluid and therefore will drain out faster

Hot. It drains better and still has the dirt and metal suspended in it.
