First, you need a decent paint. I prefer Endura EX-2C paints, but it is expensive. Start with a clean car, wash it down well, no wax. To prep the car, mask off the windows, lights, mirrors, anything you DON'T want painted. Next, sand down the entire uncovered surface with sand paper, 200 - 350 grit should do it. Using a compressor, blow off the entire surface, getting the sand and paint dust off. The surface has to be completely dust and oil free. If you can rub your hand across the car, and your hand comes up clean, you're good to go. Spray on your primer, making even strokes. Let it tack up (when you put your finger on it, it's just barely sticky). Lay down a light base coat of paint, make it even, but let your primer still show through. Paint sticks to itself better than it sticks to primer. Then lay down 2 good coats, not to thick or it will run, and keep it even. Then I like to lay down 2 good coats of clearcoat to give the paint a better shine, and a little protection. After it dries, get a good wax, and make that baby shine. If you want it to look nice, there is a lot of work, time and dedication involved. I painted my old truck in about 7 or 8 hours, that is from washing at the car wash to waxing the clearcoat, and cleanup. Good luck.

Dude....forget it. I worked as an autobody tech for over ten years and believe me, this is one area you do not want to dive into without some serious background. The materials alone will cost a minimum of $600.00, one mistake and you can just kiss it all goodbye. If you can manage it try asking a local bodyshop if they would be willing to let you intern afternoons and maybe weekends for no pay. Once you get the basics down and if you do a good job for the shop the owner may even agree to let you use the spray booth and equipment to paint your car.
Hey, it can't hurt to ask.

It takes years of experience and a natural touch to do a good paint job. You have to start out assisting someone good before you can do your own.
