My computer crashed and had to be erased recently, leaving me with an Ipod of 800 songs and no corresponding Itunes. I loaded the same Itunes disc onto the empty computer and was wondering how to place the songs from the Ipod back onto the blank Itunes without deleting the songs I already have. I've heard of others simply plugging their Ipod into their computer and the new Itunes deletes their songs by replacing their library with the new blank libary on the itunes. This is what I'm deathly afraid of happening, and am desperate for another alternative. Thanks.

Use your iPod transfer your music back to your computer without erasing any of your songs. Try this:
-open iTunes on your computer, then open iTunes preferences and leave running (this will temporarily prevent your computer from trying to sync with iPod)
-connect your iPod and wait about 15 seconds
-Go to My Computer, go to tools, click on 'folder options', then 'view tab,' then 'show hidden files.'
-open the iPod icon in My Computer
-open ipod_control
-drag the 'music' folder to somewhere on your hard drive
-right click this new music folder and select 'properties'
-clear checkmark next to 'hidden' then close this window
-eject iPod from your System Tray using the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon at the bottom right corner of your screen
-cancel the iTunes preferences window
-go to File menu, click 'add folder to library,' add 'music' folder

If you downloaded any songs from the iTunes store, you should be prompted to sync them back into your iTunes library. Anything that you downloaded from other websites, or ripped from physical CDs is added to the iPod through a one-way encryption process, which means they cannot be copied back to your computer in any usable format. The good news is that if you did rip your CD collection, you can always replenish that portion of your library...with a bit of labor on your part. The bad news is that if you purchased songs from any other website, iTunes won't be able to recover them for you, and you probably won't be able to redownload them without having to repurchase them. Next time make a point of backing up your iTunes library, including music, podcasts, videos, and games. If you do this, after you've gone through a complete reinstallation of the OS and iTunes, you can just copy the back-ups to your computer, and then have iTunes reload them into your library.
