I am getting married and want us to sign a pre-nup. How much does that cost on average (ballpark)? Also, I would appreciate any tips on finding a good pre-nup lawyer. I don;t need full service, just some help making a short and clear legal document. Or can it be made without a lawyer, just confirmed by a notary?

Kayte, a lawyer can charge a bundle for preparing a pre-nup. Depends on what you want covered. Also depends on the state you're in. Consdier not having one. Consdier that if you and your partner are willing to spend serious time together, what will the pre-nup accomplish? On the other hand, perhaps you might consider jointly signing a contract and not going through the steps of getting married. I'm serious. If no kids are planned. Assuming no kids, and two reasonably comfortable adults (financially comfortable), simply sign a contract agreeing to live together, share expenses on whatever basis you want, and making on-the-spot decisions for any major expenses. The contract can be for one year with options to renew. The two of you can draw up your own contract. You might want to consult an attorney about the wording of the contract...and maybe even a family lawyer (say one who specializes in divorce alw). Just don't get married. If you don't get married I believe (I'm not giving legal advice here) and simply live togethrer under the terms of a contract, then if you split, contract law applies, not family law. There may be a big difference. Good luck with this one.
