I agree with Somathis. If at all possible, try copying the disc - often a computer drive will be able to play it and the copy will be fine (if its a DVD you will need to use a program like DVD Shrink, which you can download free.
Any of the other methods basically involve scratching the disc further in the hope that the effect of the original scratch will be reduced. Sometimes it works, but is a risk and is only worth trying as a last resort - you could end up worse than ever.

you can buy a machine that fixes them. They have an inexpensive one at wal-mart, but you have to crank it around yourself. They also come in a battery powered machine that does the work for you.
You will use it many times so it is well worth the money to get the battery powered one!!
This process is called wet sanding(buffing) and is a similar process when removing scratches on a car. Every cd, game, and dvd I have used it on has helped, if it made it worse, why would they sell them. For example: If super glue did not make things stick together they would not sell that either!!

certain, there are various DVD/CD scratch eliminating products on the marketplace. maximum intense priced is one among the SkipDoctor, yet I actually have a cheap $10 equipment that works exceptionally properly. Or, you may attempt baking soda toothpaste or motor vehicle wax. Rub on and rub off gently.

Burning CDs removes the skips. I don't know if it also works with DVDs or not.
