my DVD writer can read CD, but can not read any DVD?

If it has a dirty lens it will quit reading DVDs first, since they have a lot smaller bits than CDs.

It may not be a dvd but only a cd read/write.

You may not have DVD playing software.
Insert a DVD, go to my computer, and double click on your DVD drive. It may not play but you should see a bunch of files.
