Both works were roundly critiqued and did not meet with academic acclaim until much later. Some of the criticism was markedly vituperative and exceeded the bounds of decorum. For example, critics noted that Sisley Alfred's work was the product of a person with two first names and no real last name. Others termed him "Sissy" Alfred. It was unclear why such pointed attacks were launched. The Bridge was later optioned by Warner Brothers executives and was adapted for the big screen to become the Bridge of the River Kwai and the Garden became reworked into "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" another point of comparison not often noted.
