Big Dog
Cayenne Pepper sprinkled where they like to dig and poop
Motion-sensor activated yard sprinkler... when it senses the cats, it shoots them w/ water. After a few weeks, you won't have to bother w/ it, they will stay away.
Dont' grow catnip or oregano! :-)

At one time, I had five or more cats around my house and I never had any problems in my garden. Sure they sheet in it, but they seldom did any damage. I also have a fence around it made out of scrap 1x3s and 2 ft chicken wire (to discourage the chickens from grazing in there). This also helps to redirect the cats. When they come to the fence, they have to make a conscious decision to jump over it or rub against it and go around. They usually go around.
Oh, and before someone suggests mothballs, they don't work. I had one cat that would dig them out of the strawberry beds and swat them like a toy. She also used a potted plant in a five gallon pot as a litter box, even though we had half a dozen mothballs in there.

You might try this trick my grandfather used, fill several plastic pop bottles with water and put them around your garden, the cats(scum of the earth) see thier reflection get scared and run away, or as grandad did use a well aimed cataput, a small stone up the backside does the trick, or there is a little man I know who will supply a number of landmines allthough you might get into trouble with the local cats protection league, or a swift kick does the trick.

You might try bloodmeal - you can get it at any gardening store. I've only used it in flower gardens though, so make sure its safe for vegetables.

Try sprinkling the area with cayenne pepper. I've also heard of using the peels of citrus fruits and using soap shavings.
