I'm not sure "layman" refer to sodium hydroxide very often but the common name is "caustic".

This can be a little confusing because the word "caustic" is also used as an adjective for anything that is corrosive, especially if it is high pH and corrosive like sodium hydroxide.

Sodium hydroxide is also known as lye. Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate

I almost said bleach but it's lye or drain cleaner. Bleach would have chlorine in it.
