I just got a new HH 187 and I can not use it yet. I plan on hooking it up to the 220 volt outlet for the dryer for now as that is the only 220 plug in the house for right now. Eventually I am going to run 220 out to the shop, but for right now I am just going to make an extension cord to use until I can wire the shop for 220.

So my question is what kind of wire do I need? What is the most affordable that will work safely? And approx. how much will it cost.

Thanks.

Hi, I've had to do similiar things for equipment. First, you need to measure the distance. The shorter the better, a longer cord will affect the performance of your machine (more so in the higher settings). If your cord is longer than say, 50 feet, you'll want 8-3 SJ, SO, SOW or whatever. You cord NEMA configuration is most likely 6/30P (three prong), but your dryer could be 14/30P (four prong), so you'll want to verify before you purchase one. If your dryer outlet is the four prong type you will still use 3 conductor cord, you simply won't use the nuetral (white or silver screw) on the cord cap. They don't exactly give these kind of parts away, they'll cost a bundle I'm sure. It might be a little cheaper to add a circuit in your panel. That's another story.

You will need to price 10-3 SO,SJ, or SOW and a set of cord caps(male and female) locally, versus 10-3 romex (NM), if you use romex you will also have to buy a breaker, receptacle, box and straps. You'll also need info on appropriate wiring methods. Good luck

Go to a hardware store and get some 10-3 S.O. cord and a male dryer plug. Then just match color for color in the plug and in the welder.

I've done similar jobs for other people in the past.

it only uses 30 amps @ 220 volts?

if it draw more than that you cannot use the dryer outlet.
