Where do you live? Was it around water? Does it have webbed toes on it's back feet? How big? Smooth shell or is it keeled somewhat? All kinds of questions in answer to a question... :)

If so, look into the legality of owning it in your state, as I do believe that there are various protections on these turtles (we got ours before those protections went into place, so we were grandfathered in...)

And another website that I just found that seems pretty good at first glance (all I was doing earlier was looking at pics....)

It could be many things, it sounds sort of like a Wood turtle.

The earlier comment about Austin's Turtle Page's World of Turtles site is good. You can also post a photo somewhere like Photobucket.com for us to look at.

I think you should go back to the store you got it from and ask the owners or you can also find a book on turtles and if you have luck you might find the same exact thing. Hope you can find the name of your turtle.

hi it extremely is definetly a container turtle, im not sure what variety, yet to me it seems maximum like an ornate container turtle. in case you found him interior the wild i propose you placed him or her back. in case you probably did no longer then seem up care sheets on google.

You should never take an animal from the wild, but since you have it now and probably won't let it go I'll help you figure out what it is. What state are you in that will help.

Madkins I think has it right. Sounds like a wood turtle. May also be a eastern box turtle.

Where did you get him? If you found him, where do you live? Was he in or near water?

You can go to this page and look through the pictures to try to identify him:

I would go to a vet, a zoo, or the place you bought it.
