The starter is turning over....that is the grinding noise you are hearing. The gear from the starter is not engaging into the ring gear of the flywheel(which turns the motor over) Either the solenoid is bad or the battery is weak or it is the wrong starter for that motor(it may not be reaching in deep enough to the flywheel) Ask if there are "different starters" for this vehicle....from the "dealer" parts department or an auto parts store> long nose - short nose.

This is a long shot that hasn't been mentioned, but if the bell housing bolts come loose from the engine the flywheel will be out of alignment and not engage with the starter properly.

i own a repair shop, and its possible the fly wheel is bad on it,,that will cause it to make the grinding noise and also not start..if it was doing his before ,and you did this work,,its very possible it may have bad teeth on the flywheel,or it may be broken on it,,you can pull the starter back off,and inspect the flywheel and see if that's it,it would be worth the trouble to take it off to find out,,good luck,i hope this help,s.

Could be a bad ring gear on the flywheel. You should take it to a good shop, give them the info and have the vehicle properly diagnosed.
