Any pet will have it's special care requirements, so I urge you to do lots of research before making a purchase.
Small birds can make great pets...they can be mostly confined but come out to play often.
Small mammals like hamsters and guinea pigs can also be fun and rewarding.
The decision is all in what you're actually looking for.

I'd evict you if it was a dog. NO NOISY PETS WHEN YOU ARE IN AN APARTMENT. I am on the residency board of my building. If it states in your lease NO PETS, then move to a place that will allow it. Alot of places will let you have a cat if there is an additional deposit. Many will accept cats, dogs are one hell of a lot harder. By the way, 2 cats are as easy to care for as one, and they can keep each other company when you are gone.

Beta fish
Anole lizards
Rats
Cats
I would vote for two kitties. Just set up their litter box, food and water, and make sure they all stay full. They are lots of fun, loving, and great companions, but males can spray, they can scratch up your furniture, and they vomit occationally.
If a cat is not confined enough, I'd go for rats. They are very interactive, smart, and social. Rats are lots of fun. Buy two, and get young females.
An aquarium is way too much maintainence, plus you can't really interact with fish. Obviously not a dog because they require lots of time, attention, space, and schedule obstacles. Not a bird, as they are noisy and messy (poop and seeds everywhere).
Have fun!

I had this problem too. I figured:
Dogs + Birds = too loud
Bunnies + Gueinapigs (spelling??) = too stinky!!
Cats = easy to get caught
So I narrowed mine down to-
Rats
Mice
Hamster
Fish
However mice and hamsters have to be watched ALL THE TIME when out of their cages. And fish..well they don't cuddle. So I settled on Rats (although I have fish and my dogs and cats stored at familys houses).
Rats are smart, and can be trained easy, and quickly. My current ratty family of 9 all are litter trained, come when called, sit, stand, stay, and know "go home" means run to your cage and get a treat ASAP!
Not to mention you can ether lock them in their cages, or let them run around (in areas with no where to run. i had to put plastic around the bottoms of my couches and stuff, but it's totally worth it!).
I think they are the perfect appartment pet! However, it is your pet and you should choose! Good luck!! :))

Small and furry mammals, like sugar gliders, chinchillas, guinea pigs and such are great, since they spend so much time in their cage. I've had both rabbits and birds, and my apartment required me to pay the pet deposit for them. Birds are great, especially parakeets, but if you live in a building with thin walls, your neighbors may complain about the chirping and get you in trouble.
Bettas are fun too, since you probably can't have a full aquarium. Talk to your management and find out which, if any, small mammals you're allowed.

Hampsters and gerbils are great! They are relatively easy to care for and they stay in a cage or in a ball most of the time. Dont get a reptile, they require a lot of time and effort, and if condidtions aren't kept just right they will die. The same goes for parrots, they need a lot of your time and attenion.
Good luck on what ever you decide!

You're trying to rationalize your want for a rabbit, even though you know it's wrong. A rabbit is NOT a parakeet. Ask yourself this - if you got a puppy or a kitten, and kept it in a cage all the time, would it be OK then? You know the answer is "no".

Get a cat, they are easy to care for and don't need to go outside like a dog, but still good companions unlike a bird or rabbit....

don't get a dog then, they're needing out a lot and things. Snakes are good, and not noisey like dogs. Mice and hampsters are good too. cats can't be trapped in all the time or else they gain weight really easy.

Get a fish and buy a good filter. Then all you have to do is feed it and clean the tank every once in a while.
