I have a 2001 Honda CR125 dirtbike, and it's time for a rebuild. I'm planning on taking it to my local dealer to have them rebuild it, but I want a good ruff estimate first on how much this may cost me. Possibly if anyone out there has had any experience with this? Maybe you could tell me around how much it would be to look over my engine and pretty much replace anything that needs replaced and rebuild the top end. Any input is greatly appreciated!! Thank you!!

In my area, you'll pay around $250 to have a top end done at a franchised dealership. A local shop would probably be in the $200 range, and you can do it yourself for $125 or less.

A basic top end on your bike is easy. It has a chrome looking nickosil sleeve. If they need boring they probably need replacing. They can't be bored and have to be resleeved. The thing is, this material is so tough it seldom wears enough to warrant it. So all you'll likely need is a piston, rings, small end bearing, wrist pin, circlips and gasket set.

Doing the work isn't hard, for the most part it can be done without removeing the engine from the frame, and won't involve any special tools outside of a torque wrench. Find a friend or rider that has done it before and get them to help you. It's something every self respecting dirt rider should know how to do! *lol*

If the bike shifts well, has no clutch slippage, doesn't overheat, and was basically running OK, in all probability it is. Check for oil and coolant leaks around the seals and gaskets prior to teardown. If none are detected, just do the top end and roost on. Otherwise, you might want to get someone with experiance to check for whatever problem you feel it has. Diving into the cases get a little more involved and should wait until you get a little more experiance.

Seriously, don't be afraid to attempt it yourself, especially with help. Wrenching on your own bike helps you to know it and understand it better. Gives you an idea of what it, and you, can and can't do. Not to mention the labor charges saved so that you can afford more seat time!

Good luck.

If you remove and replace engine it will take roughly four and half hours labour for a complete strip and rebuild plus whatever parts you need. At the very least it will be piston, ring, clips, pin and gaskets.(top end only, about 1.5hrs) Worst case, you will have to replace crankshaft or find someone to fit a rod kit.
New crank will probably be around $325.00 and a rod kit about $110.00 plus fitting or somewhere near $250.00. You may also have to replace clutch plates and maybe basket and hub, depending how much wear is present. You could spend anywhere from$300.00 to over $1,000.

If you are planning on keeping the CRfor a good while, have it completely torn down and repaired.Top end jobs are $350.00-450.00and I don`t know what a total job would cost.I would find a moto-cross racer that knows how and let him fix it.The bike shop will still need to do the bore job though.
