yes it's for shaping metal. also works well for bashing someones head in.

The ball end of a ball peen hammer is used to inset a nail that has been hammered into a wall. there may be other uses as well but this is the only way i have used one.

It's mainly used to peen the end of rivets....it spreads the ends over.

yes I have, many times. it puts a lot more force in a small area. great for driving out pins or stuck bolts. basically anything a mechanic find to hit with one.
