What type of degree is needed? An A.A.? I've heard people say they subbed while in college, how do you go about doing that?

The requirements vary from state to state and literally from school district to school district. The district I work in only requires a high school diploma and the ability to pass a background check. Some other districts in our state require a college degree and yet some others require a teaching certificate. However, I think most just require a high school degree and a clean background. The most important thing to most schools is simply the desire to substitute. I did it while I was in college and it was my springboard to getting a teaching position in the school of my choice. Substituting can be a lot of fun and you can usually work as often as you like - it can be a full time job. Just call your local school board to see what their qualifications are and then I would go visit with each school official personally in each school you want to sub in.

Depends on individual states. Some states require a BA while others only require an AA. Very possible that subs in certain states only need an associate degree to do subbing while in college, but it also helps if they are in college working on their BA.

I think some school districts want you to have about sixty college hours and a back ground check. I have worked in a school for 22 years and we are always short on good subs. Please contact the school administration in your town and ask them. It's easier than you think.
