I recently got a guitar, and I'm planning to teach myself to play it.
I was wondering when I should learn chords. I've heard people wouldn't start chords until a year later. So should I learn all the notes first, and learn to play them well before I start chords, or just go ahead and learn them?

There is a lot to learn and notes are important but you'll find after you've been playing for a while that most of the time you will play chords. I would suggest learning both right from the beginning.

I taught myself too for the first few years and I progressed very slowly. Then I went to music school and everything opened up for me. It's cool to teach yourself but if you were to take lessons you would learn much faster with the added advantage of not forming any bad habits. Just something to think about.

Also try to jam with other musicians whenever you can. You'll learn so much. I know I did.

Try this to speed up your progress:

1. Learn the basic chords E, A, D, G, E minor, A minor, C, D minor. Keep practicing each one until your hands and fingers get used to it. They will be sore the first few times you do it.

2. Then start learning how to change between them. Try it in groups of three. (E, G, D) or (E, A minor, D). This will help you learn what's called muscle memory.

3. Then learn power chords. They are EASY after a few hours. Almost all of Nirvana's/Green Days songs are played with power chords.

4. Play with some other guitarists. They will teach you volumes. Plus, it's just more fun.

You have to be dedicated to do this. It does not happen overnight. The most important thing is that you learn how to do each chord accurately before you do them quickly. Then learn an easy Nirvana song to build your confidence.

If you're interested in basic pop and rock stuff, then chords are the way to go, definitely. I think classical relies more on notes. Jump in and start out with chords, I'd say.
