I suspect it has a lot to do with western commercial values. Basically our economy (and lifestyles) are driven by making everyone feel inadequate with what you have and how you look.
Every commercial is along the lines of "Your life would be better if you had this product", "Your teeth are not white enough", "you are too tubby and unattractive, good news is we have a product that can help you".
Whilst men and women are under different pressures the ideal we are sold is still the same. Men must be tall, strong, wealthy and very sexy. Women need to be slim, beautiful and sexually available.
Even those crazy tampon commercials make having your period seem like damn good fun. Not a cramp or PMT in sight. Lots of jumping around in the water with your girlfriends in bikini's and riding horses it seems if you believe the commercials.
No wonder most of us feel poor, unattractive and undesirable. This pressure is unrelenting and always being push to us from every angle.

These days it's easy to find depression in little things in the world. With all this world hunger, stock anxiety, and war people have been known to crash easily. Sometimes it's hard to find all the good things in the world and it's a lot easier to feel sad than to hide it and feel happy.
I actually experienced depression when I was younger, and now I'm a psychology major as well and haven't been depressed, or barely sad, since.

The more the Human beings go from there religion the more they get dipressed... God made us like that.... the real peace of mind comes with beiliving in a Relgion...... and not any religion ... just read all the major religions and find out the most logical religion that answers your every question IN A LOGICAL MANNER....... and follow that religion....
but we need to be sure that we are reading about some religion from an authentic source.... reading about a religion from internet without consulting a person of that religion can be very dangerous.......

Some people have pointed to increased isolation because of the types of technology we have at our everyday disposal. I don't know if I agree with that, but...worth mentioning. If you mean in general, instead of specifically more-so now, then...uh...why wouldn't they? Seems like a (granted, not particularly very beneficial) genetic variation as far as the biological end is concerned. Add enough stress and other factors, and there ya go.

I am not sure why. However it is often referred to as the common cold of psychology. Because of its prevalence (this is NOT to say that depression is not a serious mental illness.)

People develop depression when their resources are overwhelmed by stress. This can happen either because they were abused as children and as the result developed few mental resources to deal with adult stress, or because as adults the person faces extreme stress such as unemployment, hunger, war, and or poverty to the such an extent that their mental resources are overwhelmed.
