I'm over 21, and I still think its silly. You can die for your country, get married, blow your money on strip clubs and gambling, be tried as an adult, but not old enough to have a drink? I just don't get it.

And I doubt anyone under 21 has ever been on death row, but do you think they'd let you have a beer with your last meal?

Good point. Or how about being old enough to go to war? Or being too young to get into an R movie, but old enough to pay the adult price?

Interesting question. Some people between 18 and 21 are mature and legally considered adults, depending on where they live. But alcohol is an addictive drug, and society doesn't believe that younger adults are mature enough to handle it. But in all fairness, there are plenty of people much older who are not mature enough to handle it. I guess there just has to be a cut-off point, where if you're 20 on Thursday night, and your birthday is the next day, you can't drink legally until Friday. I know it doesn't make much sense, but it's the law. As for the beer with your last meal, the law probably still prevails. So I'd say probably no. Sorry! But you bring up an interesting point.

I have questioned your points a million times, and even our government can't answer it. There are more adult alcohal related death accidents percentages than teens. The stats prove otherwise. And another thing many have stated that our government ceases to observe is that all other countries who a younger drinking age, dont have our problem. And this is because young adults and teens dont feel the need to do it because its legal, or can ask their parents for a ride because they wont get in troubel because what theyre doing is legal. If you EVER get an answer to such a question, PLEASE make it a national statement so everyone can finally know.

The brain begins formation several days after conception and does not finish until about the age of 21. During that time, damage done because of intoxication; effects the brain more intensely. (lowering iq, lowering ability to memorize and store information in an accessible place) You must keep in mind, the brain is able to increase in ability to learn, remember and process information. You don't want to interfere during this time with those interactions. It is best to increase its capacity and strengthen it while you can, so that when you are older it will withstand the effects of aging. I speak to my students about this issue occasionally, and they finally understand it isn't adults making ridiculous rules.

i'm not sure that individuals are mature enough to get married at the age of 18, but anyhow...i def see your point. something to consider is that your prefrontal cortex doesn't completely develop until you are 25 or so. this is the area that helps control judgement and often explains some of the behavior we see in our teens. alcohol consumption (esp in high quantities) isn't that great for a growing body and brain. BUT, i realize your question refers to "a glass" versus "a bottle"...i think it all goes back to the Christian (protestant and puritanical) roots of our country. (no, i am not saying that these are our only roots, i am saying that it is a big party of our history).

What I think is stupid is that in Canada, and the United States, you are mature enough to have sex before you can get married. Where is the logic?

Maturity has nothing to do with your initial question. At 18, yes, one can have a lot of fun, but if you take a sip, you can be arrested. Its the law and it was created by people like your parents and your grandparents, so blame them.
How do you know no one has been on deathrow before their 21st birthday? Have you done the research? Obviously, this is a rant and has nothing to do with actually asking a real question.
Ask a better question next time.

I totally agree with you and have thought about this many times...I think that the government is just too worried about the welfare of people in other countries to even care what people in the US think.
