I think racists should only be put in jail if they infringe on someones rights. Plus, they would run out of room and that would cost us more money to take care of those idiots.

I don't think they need to go to jail unless they commit a crime. If an individual were to commit a crime based upon racism, the sentence should be much tougher.
The best punishment that may actually make a non-violent racist person to see the light is for them to be treated as if they are the person they hate.
An example would be if the person is white and they hate black people. I would love to see them "sentenced" to live with a black family for a month in a black neighborhood. Maybe if a person were to see what they were hating they would change.
The only way we will see an end to racism is through understanding.
Oh by the way (for the individuals who answered this question in the following way), racism is not freedom of speech - racism is hatred.

Technically, from what I've seen of our justice system, people can believe whatever they want. However, when they act on their beliefs and the action hurts someone else, then others (such as the justice system) can get involved. So, yes, racist people who act or speak in a way that hurts others should somehow be stopped, be that being put in jail or another punishment.

Malcolm X said that all men are racist. I guess we could turn Earth into a prison. No one could permanently escape this prison.
Seriously, yes, depending on you personal definition of racist. Prejudice, is the thought, while racism is an act. I do know thought colors our action. We should not regulate thought. THis in not 1984. Direct action of improper thoughts should be punished. THe question is are words just vocalized thought or overt acts. I hate to go to jail, because I said something stupid.

No. Having racist opinions is not breaking the law. If someone thought you were racist, but you knew you were not, would you want to go to jail?

No. . are you serious.
1st amendment rights. . .and your allowed to think what you want. I am not condoning racism, but you can't throw people in jail just because they like blue m&m's. Your about as smart as your freaking stinky sock if you actually think that.
You should be thrown in jail for being such an idiot with a simple mind. . even more simple than the racists you are referring to.

I think so also, but everyone has a right to feel or say what they want. If they want to be racist, then let them be ignorant just as long as they don't carry out the actions that they speak.

Only if they directly threaten someone or deliberately try and incite violence. Jailing someone for an opinion only is moving into Thought Police territory.

They are just ignorant. If we institutionalized all ignorant people, there not only wouldn't be much left, but who would entertain us? Maybe it's just me, but I've found that some stupid people can be quite funny without intending to be. Hollywood is filled with them.
The should only be imprisioned if they physically act on their racist feelings.

No. Thought crimes should not be punishable by imprisonment.
That's stupid overkill.
Obviously when racisttreat others badly in a measurable way, there should be mechanism to deal with that.
Racism is something that is loser mentality. But very easy to accuse people of racism who are not.
