My mom is a librarian and as part of the school fundraiser, she and another librarian are throwing a pajama party for a group of 20 kids. They want to read a book that has been made into a movie, and after show the movie for the kids. It needs to be some kind of picture book, that would be a really quick read. Not anything like harry potter, or a long chapter book. We don't know what the ages will be or if they'll be boys or girls. she teaches at an elementary school, so she could have anywhere between 5 year olds to 11 year olds. The movie would need to be appropriate for everyone watching. probably G or PG. Any ideas?
thanks

The Cat in the Hat
Jumanji
Eloise (made into TV movie "Eloise at the Plaza")
Shrek
Curious George
Madeline
The Stupids (Harry Allard/James Marshall)
The Polar Express
Merlin and the Dragons (Jane Yolen) (available on DVD)
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day (a chapter out of a longer book) might work

Andrew Henry's Meadow is in production now, and Where the Wild Things Are is supposed to come out in 2008 -- not that this will help your mom now, but maybe if they do it again they can keep this in mind. Another option may be to read the first chapter out of a longer book, and then start the movie. I think kids could make the connection that way, just as well as if the whole book had been read to them. It certainly would present them with a lot more possibilities!

Of course, there are hundreds if not thousands of shorter films made for use in schools, but they're usually like Reading Rainbow segments, where they just pan the actual artwork from the book while someone reads the story.

ETA: Hmmm, I can't think of any children's PICTURE books that were turned into movies off the top of my head. Maybe Curious George. I'm sorry, I guess I 'm not much help.
