I saw Citizen Kane today, with high expectations due to its praise. I was very dissapointed. I thought it was a pretty awful film. It was very slow-paced and boring. The ending didn't shock me at all. I wouldn't even call it a twist.

Now I know many people would disagree, but i'd just like to know - why is it so highly regarded as one of the greatest films ever?

I remember seeing it years and years ago. I couldnt remember that much about it but it became a must-see, a cult film, so when i saw it again a couple of years ago i was disappointed, and if i'm really honest, it's really crap.

SPOILER ALERT!! - Skip the last paragraph if you don't want to know the ending.

Citizen Kane is a movie that has been disected over and over again, by fans and critics alike, and it would take ages to go into detail about the intricacies of the movie.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion about Citizen Kane, and it's been loved and loathed in equal measures. But despite being a flop at the box office, it was still nominated for 9 Oscars, although only won 1 (Best Original Screenplay), although the movie was criticised for it's shallow characterisation and lack of emotional depth.

But it was actually the technical innovations that have made this movie a classic, such as the use of deep focus, low-angle shots, episodic sequence, aging make-up effects and lightning mix audio. While some of these may not have been "new" ideas, this was certainly the first time they were used together and to such great effect.

If you're the sort of person who likes blockbuster action movies, then you're obviously not going to like Citizen Kane, it's just not that kind of movie, but if you can appreciate good film-making then there's a good chance you'll like Citizen Kane. Maybe this is why you didn't like it.

Anyway, as I said, if you don't want to know the ending, then you shouldn't be reading this paragraph. The ending is not meant to be a huge story twist, it merely ties up the movie. The word "rosebud", as you saw, was the name of his sled as a child, and reminds him of his childhood when his mother gave him away. It's not meant to be shocking, it's just meant to link the end of his life with a milestone near the beginning of his life.

Citizen Kane is more a film for students of cinematography than for the average movie viewer. Take a film course or read a book on cinematography and you might appreciate it more!

Also, at the time, it was very shocking. It was based on the real live Kane... Randolph Hearst. And you didn't say stuff like that about Hearst back then. He was like the richest and most powerful dude around. So it was pretty audacious when it came out, too.

Because some people cannot think for themselves once they know what societies answer to a topic is. They are told CK is great and they repeat it without ever even watching it.

some movies are like those just because respectable critics give it their blessing and everyone else does, too...kinda like a modern take on the emperor's new clothes
