Yes, you have to take basic chem course (Just one semester). The course is a overview of general chemistry to organic chemistry. It is a simplified 2 years worth of chemistry (for science majors) watered downed into one course. It is not a easy course but it isn't a neurosurgery either. I tutor Chem in a local Junior College and 80% of the students I get are Nursing students. As long as you clarify things as soon as you come across them and put in the studying hours, you should do just fine.

I am an associate degree in nursing program and I had to take General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry, both 3 credit hour courses. They were not hard at all and if there is anything in the class that is a difficult concept, get help right away to clear it up and it will make the rest of the semester much more bearable.

Yes, of course!
The human body runs by generating billions and billions of chemical reactions- per second! You need a basic knowledge of chemistry in order to understand how diseases affect the body. Plus, you are responsible for giving out the doses of drug ordered by the doctor. If you don't know chemistry, how will you understand how the drugs work, how things can go wrong and what to look our for?
Usually nurses take chemistry one and two, biology one and two and microbiology one and two.
Chemistry is a lot of fun. When you look at life, you can break down pretty much anything into a chemical reaction. Don't be intimidated- look at it as a challenge. Are you up for a challenging career?
Good luck!

You bet you do, but you won't have to take the HARD organic chemistry course (meant for pre-med and chem majors) so you'll get a BIG break there.

Please do not talk about organic chemistry.

I think I had a nasty flashback.
