the catholic church was no longer as powerful as it once was. they use to have the power to bring down kings. Now if they threatened to excommunicate someone, it would not be the end of the world. they could just go to the other religion. this is an option that people didn't have before the reformation. the church continued to fade into the backroud as time went on. considering how big the church was and how powerful, it is interestiong to compare the influence now and then.

Are you talking about Martin Luther's reformation or the British one in the 1700's?
