We were just in Mexico. They ALL spoke English there! THEN, you go into the Mexican part of Milwaukee, WI and NO ONE can speak English. What's wrong with that picture?

Are you sick of pressing 1 for English?

Senator Russ Feingold told me it is too exclusionary to make English our official language. Why wasn't he around when my ancestors came from Germany and Poland? THEY HAD TO SPEAK ENGLISH!

My grandparents were immigrants & learned English. I think English should be our official language. I think a common language is an important way of creating & maintaining a sense of unity. If you dooubt that having 2 official languages can be divisive, look North.

English is just the De facto language of The United States; it is not official. In fact, because English is not an official language New Mexico can have it's state Declaration in both Spanish and English. The reason SOME white people (We're not all like that) get mad at others speaking different languages here in the U.S. is because they are either ignorant of other languages, cultures, or people or don't understand that everyone has a free right to do as they please when it comes to language, beliefs, and lifestyles. America was founded by immigrants for immigrants, we are the land of the free and we as a country seem to be forgetting that.

You were in a westernized area. I lived in Mexico for two years. the only people that spoke English were a few college students. So don't go trying to support your argument with your 'observation'. Any place typical Americans go for vacation is not real Mexico. How many street signs did you see in English? How many phones did you call that said, "for English press one"? How many things did you read that were printed in English besides your travel books and Spanish/English dictionary? They ALL did not speak English. The customs people at the airport don't speak it ( they didn't even try to talk to me being blond/blue until I spoke to them in Spanish ), the taxi drivers didn't speak it either. So next time you go to Mexico, go someplace that is not America South. English is the language in the country. Period.

The language units the nation and must be leaned by anyone who wants to be a citizen .
The problem with a majority of Mexicans who come here is they fail to understand that English is the language needed to have a chance at a future of prosperity in America .

My Father came from Greece by way of France and India. When he got here he had to learn English from the Git Go. English should be not only the official language of the USA, but everyone on Earth ought to learn English. In Scandinavia all business in the upper echelons are done in English by law. In Paris, France
when going into any "Major" Bank you can speak English to conduct you business. If you fly to any international airport in the world, you will be able to communicate in English. All major Ocean Liners conduct their business in English. The KJV of the Bible has been used to win more people to Christ than any other version. Anyone who speaks English has a definite advantage over the non English Speaker.

well times do change. most countries have at least two offical languages.

I think for the time being it should be the officail language. we have too much going on to worry about which language people talk in. maybe we make it offical but have the bill set to expire (which means it can be remade) in 7 years.

I hate not having people speak english when thats all I speak. and I think when you're hear you should learn it- even if we had two officail languages most people will learn both. but america is falling behind, most other countires expect their people to speak at least two languages.
my family was from Poland to, and even their my family knew polish, english, and the basics of french and/or german.

Yes. Welcome home...

Anyone who travels abroad (whether to come to the US or an American traveling overseas) without a basic knowledge of the language is jeopardizing not only their safety, but the safety of others.

We offer many FREE courses in ESL (English as a Second Language). Those who choose not to take advantage of them should do so at their own risk.

The areas of Mexico most American travelers see, however, are resort areas, where English is a requirement. Once you travel outside those areas, finding someone who speaks English well is rare.

It is frustrating to feel like we are giving in to illegal immigrants.

But in some ways it is the official language. You don't really get ahead in this country if you don't speak it. Carlos Mencia had a parody of this on comedy central last night. His brother was selling a "learn to speak english" self improvement program.
