Lawyers dont risk their lives, are not in any danger, dont have to do any strenuous work, if anything they should be paid less. Do you really think you can give an answer that would possibly change my mind? Do you think you are so wise and knowlegeable that you can say the first thing that pops into your mind and I will go, "wow I never thought of that before"? They go to university, "wow thats clever", give it your best shot i could use a good laugh.

The question is why not what. All the negative answers only indicate that this is the monopoly game we play these are the rules we have chosen and therefore this is what causes that result, there are no "whys". More education; irrelevant, market forces; irrelevant these are not reasons of why. Any fool can come up with reasons of what for; it is neccessary to sacrifice virgins because we believe it will make the harvest better thats about all you have really said.
Because they wanted to be cops? Is that how you calculate how much you should charge for a product or service, you dont work out the costs based on component costs you just pick a number because thats the number you choose it must be right?
they have to pay for education? So why not pay it back and then work for the same?????????? they go to uni? So what, who is keeping them safe to make it to and from uni? What the hell has it got to do with anything. Some really brainless answers.

Police are paid thru a budget, i.e. what taxes are generated in a county/town , the number of policemen and the amount of pay they receive is based on that. When a police officer starts out as a rookie, they all start at the same pay, It is a public service job and their pay disclosed when the job is posted. Though not always the greatest starting pay, the benefits are usually excellent. If someone truly wants to be an officer , they do it regardless of pay. Often times the pay raises go up quickly, but there usually is a cap. This is also all known to the officer when hired. Its a basic take it or leave it type thing.
Lawyers on the other hand are hired and we pay for those goods and services either out of pocket or by signing a contract allowing the lawyer to take a certain percentage of money if a monetary value is won in a case. Some state have a cap on this. We are allowed to pick the lawyer of our choice based on the cost of his services.

Lawyers set their own fees, while policemen are paid by a government eitity of one sort or another.

A lawyer with a good track record of winning cases can charge whatever the market will bear for his services. As long as there are people around who can and WILL pay what he asks, then he's making exactly what he deserves. This is why a corporate attorney in New York will very likely earn much more than a defense attorney in Marlow, Oklahoma. More money at stake, richer people willing to pay More for the "best" representation.

Even the Best cop is at the mercy of yearly budgeting processes and the changeable tax base of the community he serves. Also, there is the minor detail that if a policeman quits, there are ten guys hoping to get his place. In this case, the marketplace can depress earnings.

Sorry. I know this answer won't satisfy you. It just happens to be correct, though, and your attitude in posing this question won't make policemen earn any more money.

Most cops I ever knew do pretty well for themselves moonlighting as security at sporting events and other high profile events. I wouldn't be too sad for them.

Technically not all lawyers make more then cops.. some lawyers are not able to make a living in law after graduating. Some because they are idiots and partially because there are so many lawyers out there. But the successful ones charge huge hourly rates.... while cops income is limited to the government budget.

Same reason firemen and military also make less....

It seems if you put your life on the line....you get what others think your worth. If you are a professional you get what you think you are worth.

I just find it fascinating that you posted this question in the Psychology category.

Lawyers and police both make the criminal justice system work, hence the title of the television series "Law and Order."

Police require more hands-on training and face much greater physical danger, just like you suggest. You're right.

Lawyers require more education and must know many more rules and laws.

It's not necessarily fair, but people with more education generally find higher-paying jobs. Perhaps it's because that much education involves a great deal of sacrifice.

first of all... you dont have to be such a dick about it... second; lawyers go through more schooling and more rigorous exams, they have to deal with the same people that the police arrest but they dont get that nifty little bullet proof vest, they work longer hours, they work for the person they are defending instead of the state, they have to defend people that may or may not be guilty regardless of their opionion... the list goes on but I'll leave it at that for now. I'm not saying lawyers are more important but they do deserve what they get paid... the better they are, the more they are worth.

One chooses who they want to be, police could have gone onto to school, on grants, if needed, lawyers made lawyers becasue that's what they wanted, policeman are police because they chose to be a policeman, if they didn't they quit...on both sides

More to the point, why are police paid more than correctional officers? CO's spend more time with the "scumbags" that cops just drop at the door and say good riddance to!
